Letters from Dorothy Mary Faith Venables
A Venabloise resident, Mrs. Christiane Lallemand, donated two letters accompanied by a photo to the “Gilbert de Venables” Cultural Center. They are written by Dorothy Mary Faith Venables in perfect French and addressed to Madame Ernest Lambert, a resident of the village. These letters are written at the end of a trip which allowed Dorothy to visit and discover Venables in 1901.

PRELIMINARY RESEARCH ON: DOROTHY MARY FAITH VENABLES
Dorothy Mary Faith VENABLE visited Venables in September 1901, likely accompanied by her mother. She was 19 years old and resided in Bushey, England. She maintained correspondence with Mr. and Mrs. (Ernest and Noemi) LAMBERT ARNES. According to the 1901 census in Venables, Ernest was a harness maker and Noemi was a housewife.

Date of Baptism: December 2, 1882, at St Anne’s, Westminster, Middlesex, England

Parents: Mr. Edward VENABLES and Mrs. Edith Mary VENABLES. She had a younger sister, Persis Elizabeth VENABLES (1), born in 1889 and died on December 7, 1913, in Veytaux Chillon, Switzerland. According to the census, her mother lived alone as her father had passed away in 1891.​
In 1906, at the age of 24, Dorothy embarked alone on the Caronia from Liverpool to join a cousin in Charlottesville, Virginia (passenger list of the ship (2). She returned to England a year later and married Mr. Humphrey George Ambrose BAKER, born in 1882 in Oxford, on June 5, 1910, at Holy Trinity, Marylebone, London. ​In 1911, Dorothy and her husband resided in Kensington, London, according to the 1911 census. They also had a servant.

In her letters, Dorothy mentions a mathematics professor from the University of Virginia who had visited them in London 13 years earlier, in 1888. Her mother had sent a letter to him, but the professor had passed away on August 11, 1900. His wife received the letter and during a visit to London, she gave Dorothy an almanac containing photos of the university.
The professor was named Charles Scott VENABLE (without the 's'), and a school named Venable School (3) was inaugurated in 1925 in his honor. His career is detailed on the site: "encyclopediavirginia.org."
