Each year on May 8, Venables pays tribute to the English and French soldiers who fell defending the soil of the village during the days of June 9 and 10, 1940. A tribute ceremony is held at the Commonwealth military square where four soldiers from the Regiment of the Duke of Wellington and an unknown English soldier. At each commemoration, the members of the CCGVenables join in the tribute organized by the Association of Veterans of Venables and the Municipality. After the English and French anthems, Sébastien a Piper performed “The Water Is Wide”, a famous Irish ballad to mark the sacrifice of the British soldiers who rest on French soil.
