Convention 1991

In 1991, more then 300 families were accounted for from all over the world and the 2nd convention took place on 12th, 13th and 14th July 1991. Over 50 families with the names of Venables met again for three days. One can see their pleasure to see people they had met five years ago and to meet again on their ancestors land and to get to know the new people with the same surname.

  • On 12th of July 1991, there was the official meeting of the families by M. Jean Marie Drouet, Mayor of Venables and Patrick Lequette, president of the A.C.S.V. They all gathered in front of the Town Hall for the traditional photo session.

In the evening there was a reception at the Village Hall to welcome the Venables. A speech was made in English by Franois Loncle, a Deputy who drew attention to the appropriate nature of the Convention in the context of the European Union.

  • On 13th July 1991 there was a visit of Bayeux and Les Andelys. In the evening a Son and Lumire spectacle should have been presented to the families and the villagers so that they could experience the life story of Gilbert de Venables. It was a re-enactment of the Battle of Hastings when William the Conqueror invaded England in 1066. Unfortunately, torrential rain prevented the actors from performing outdoors and they all ended up in their costumes in the Village Hall with a lot of success and applause. They then danced all night long.

  • On the 14th of July 1991 there was a visit of the Village church and the feudal mound and the story of the village was narrated by Bernard Oger and Patrick Lequette. The day ended up with a buffet.
